Assignment 1

Subject: Self introduction

Dear Mdm Fazilah

I am Johnathan Perera and I am currently studying in Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (Land). Before serving 2 years of National Service, I was a diploma student in Temasek Polytechnic studying Aerospace Electronics.

My passion in engineering took flight when I went for the Air Show in 2016. I was fascinated about how engineering could make big machines work. People saw the pilots as the stars of the show but I saw the engineers as the stars. They were the one that worked tirelessly behind the scene to make the Air Show as successful as it was.

My strength in communication is that I am an active listener. My friends often confide in me when they have problems troubling them. They feel comfortable telling me about such problems as I would always pay my fullest attention to them and display good active listening attributes such as maintaining eye contact and not interrupting them when they are speaking.

As for my weakness in communication, I lack clarity when communicating. When I was serving the National Service, I was often put in positions where I had to deliver instructions to my peers. However, I am often not clear with the instructions that I try to get across to my peers. Time and time again, my peers would feedback to me that I had to speak louder and clearer as they found it difficult to comprehend what I was trying to put across.

By the end of this module, my goal is to be able to speak with more clarity and be able to present myself as a confident speaker in front of a crowd. This will greatly help my journey through my course and my future endeavours.

Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude for taking the time to read this through.

Yours sincerely

Johnathan Perera

  1. Hi Johnathan,

After reading your post, it made me understand you better and I realised that we have a very similar interest in Aerospace.
I am able to relate when it comes to verbal communication. I do lack clarity and loudness when I present my ideas and sometimes, it might lead to misunderstandings. Having good communication skills is vital when we enter the working world and differentiate us from the rest.
I have confidence that we will help each other to reach our goals for this module.

  2. Hey Johnathan, great post. A lack of clarity in communication would often cause others to mislead or misunderstand information which is something you want to avoid. Personally, for me, I would make it a habit to repeat myself a second time and to clarify with others on whether my instructions were clear. I believe that improving oneself clarity in communication takes times and practice.

    1. A very good suggestion take I will take note of and most likely try it out when trying to deliver instructions.

  3. Hi Johnathan,
I really enjoyed reading this self-introduction, how each paragraph is clear and concise as well as allowing me to be get to know you better. Your passion for engineering and how you saw the engineers as the "unsung heroes" behind the airshow really resonated with me. This shows your ability to see the bigger picture and along with your full attention you give to others are factors that contributes to a great team. As I have a problems with not being loud enough for others to hear while speaking, I believe that with practice and in time we will be able to work to overcome this issue together.
    Cheers,

  4. Hey Jonathan,

Really well written post, It is great to see that your interest in Engineering started when you went for the Air Show in 2016 and you pursued Aerospace as your field of study as well. And instead of just praising the pilots, you gave credit to the engineers as well. I too hard problems with clarity when communicating before National Service, however people started to say, not now then when. I am sure you will be able to improve on the clarity when communicating throughout this module and by the end of this module be able to confidently express yourself.

    1. "Not now then when", a quote I will definitely tell myself when I have an opportunity to practice communicating so that I can confidently express myself!

  5. Dear Johnathan

    Thank you for your letter.

I am glad that you are a good listener. It is such an important skill, not just at the personal level but also at the workplace.

Now that you are in your project teams, you need to train yourself to craft or outline your points before speaking since you have identified speaking with clarity as a weakness. Without clarity in speech, your ideas will not be understood. I hope you can overcome this weakness.

Best wishes in this module and at SIT!

    Kind regards
    Faz (Mdm)
